I'm writing a custom view and need it to behave like a LinearLayout. I'm looking for a good place to put a ViewGroup to contain my LinearLayout. I was going to try and wrap a LinearLayout in a RelativeLayout and make the RelativeLayout fill the screen with the LinearLayout being contained within it. I know that's not a good idea, but I was hoping someone would know of a better way of doing this. A: I was hoping someone would know of a better way of doing this. In order for you to be able to treat the custom view like a LinearLayout you will need to give it a LayoutParams: private LayoutParams layoutParams; @Override protected void onLayout(boolean changed, int l, int t, int r, int b) { super.onLayout(changed, l, t, r, b); layoutParams = new LayoutParams(LayoutParams.MATCH_PARENT, LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT); } @Override protected void onMeasure(int widthMeasureSpec, int heightMeasureSpec) { super.onMeasure(widthMeasureSpec, heightMeasureSpec); setMeasuredDimension(layoutParams.MATCH_PARENT, layoutParams.MATCH_PARENT); } By setting LayoutParams to the MATCH_PARENT and WRAP_CONTENT you are telling your custom view to fill all of the available space on the screen as it should for a ViewGroup. After you have called onMeasure you will be able to call requestLayout() to have the view layout itself and use the measurements for a view. You may also want to look into setLayoutParams() and LayoutParams.MATCH_PARENT. As the Android reference says: A width value of MATCH_PARENT means that the width of this view should expand to fit the width of its container.
